When the DNA in the prostate gland cell is mutated or injured, prostate cancer develops and if untreated it may grow or spread to other organs.

RISK FACTORS FOR PROSTRATE CANCER

The following group of people according to Columbia urology specialists are at a higher risk of developing prostate cancer;

  • Prostate cancer generally develops after the age of 50, with most cases diagnosed in men over the age of 65.

  • African- and Caribbean-American men are twice as likely as American men of European ancestry to develop prostate cancer.

  • Men with a father or brother with prostate cancer have an increased risk for developing the disease.

  • Studies indicate that men who have a high-fat diet and who smoke have a greater chance of developing prostate cancer.

In numerous cases prostate cancer grows slowly, some more aggressive than others however in its early stages prostate cancer does not show specific signs or symptoms therefore annual prostate screening provides the best opportunity for identifying prostate cancer in its early stages.

WARNING SIGNS FOR PROSTATE CANCER

  • Weak or interrupted flow of urine

  • Frequent urination especially at night

  • Difficulty urinating or holding back urine

  • Inability to urinate

  • Pain or burning when urinating

  • Presence of blood in the urine or semen

  • Constant pain in the back, hips, or pelvis

  • Difficulty having an erection

  • Pain during ejaculation

Although these symptoms could be as a result of other medical conditions, it is important to contact a doctor if any of the above warning signs are observed.
